When you become a member of ID Watchdog, they will verify your identity and create a Baseline Identity Profile for you. Each month thereafter, they’ll send you an update, with changes or giving you an “all clear” notice. There are three steps that follow in protecting your identity. Step 1 is verification. They verify all of your information that the world of data knows about you. There is only a $1.95 one-time charge for this and it sets the stage for their monitoring going forward. Step 2 is to have you verify all of the information they found with misspellings, etc. Step 3 is the monthly monitoring. Each month, ID Watchdog will go back into these previously searched databases and look for any changes to your sensitive information. If there are no new changes, they’ll notify you that your records are clean. If not, ID Watchdog will notify you and go through this information. Many times it’s because of a new account you opened or you’ve moved. If the changes seem to be fraud, ID Watchdog Resolution Services are alerted and they’ll will work on your behalf to clear your name. The industry leader doesn’t usually have the best product, but most of the time the best brand recognition. You’re getting this with LifeLock. LifeLock does a lot for you, but you can accomplish a lot of this for free on your own and they even state that on their website. At least they’re honest. IDProtection.com thinks it’s important to look at the percentages related to identity theft and you’ll see that credit based id theft is only about 25% of all id theft. With this in mind, will the fraud alert that LifeLock places for you do a lot to prevent theft? LifeLock states that they will do everything they can to recover your identity and has the $1 million guarantee to back this up. This is good to know that you’re identity will be brought back without you having to do much. You may not know what or who does the recovery work though.
As you can see IDProtection.com has been a little harsh on LifeLock. Other comparison sites rate LifeLock very high and give them a lot of praise as the industry leader. These sites do this because LifeLock is the easiest sell due to brand recognition. IDProtection.com’s philosophy is different. We have put a lot of weight on the recovery aspect of a service and this plays a part in our rating. We believe it’s not the worst out there, but certainly not the best.
